The Werewolf Song

Sister’s boyfriend  he’s a werewolf
He stays out all night
Running ‘round on all fours
Chasing everything in sight
I told mama about it
She said, “That’s alright”
Sister’s boyfriend he’s a werewolf
It’s making me uptight.

I said, ‘Mama he’s a werewolf
He rips open peoples throats’
She said, “Werewolf is a vulgar term
They prefer lycanthrope.
Sister hasn’t many boyfriends
She’s really kind of plain
So be nice and polite to him
And forget your wolf bane.”

Then in walked sister and her boyfriend
It must have been a full moon
He had blood on his face
His shirt and his shoes
I said, ‘Sister you went with him?
I think that’s going too far.’
She said, “Not in these hi-heels, silly,
I waited in the car.”

Sister’s boyfriend he’s a werewolf
I don’t think he cares for me
Since the jokes about
Silver bullets, parvo
And his fleas.
At dinner Mama asked him,
“What would you like for dessert?”
He just looked at me and smiled
And said, “Don’t worry
This won’t hurt.”

"Ode To A Garage Band--1982"

Me and Booker and Eddie
We're starting this band.
We should be playing out by summer
If everything goes as planned.
We're gonna jam in Eddie's basement
'Cuz his mom works nights
And we found this used fog machine
And a couple strobe lights.
Now Booker doesn't own a bass
And we don't know any songs
But we got a cool band name thought up
And our logo's been drawn.

Me and Booker and Eddie
We're starting this band.
We're gonna get to the gigs
In my mom's Chevy Astro Van.
Yeah, we do some covers
But originals that's really our cup.
We're really gonna rock the house
As soon as we think a couple up.
We sound like a combination of
Aldo Nova and Pablo Cruise
With a touch of Funkadelic
And a just bit of Huey Lewis And The News.

Me and Booker and Eddie
We're starting this band.
But we can't jam at Eddie's no more
'Cuz his mom got mad.
We got together at my place
a couple times up in my room
But my kid sister kept bugging us
So we couldn't get in any kind of groove.
No, Booker still doesn't own a bass
He brought over his trumpet instead.
Now we're kind of a mix of Miles Davis
And the Grateful Dead.

Me and Booker and Eddie
We were starting this band
But Eddie fell off his Mo-Ped,
Broke his hand.
Now Booker says he can't buy a bass
'Cuz he's saving up for a car, yeah right,
Broker's whole life savings
Is a handful of change in a jar.
Me, I just started baseball
I mainly pinch run
You know, Caulfield and Ackley
Told me you play the drums.
We ought to get together sometime,
Up in my room and jam.
I have a couple cool logos drawn up.
Wanna start a band?

“Hunting For Gnomes”

Lately I’ve been hunting for gnomes
I went out again Monday night
I brought a lantern, a fishing net
And a twelve pack of Keystone Light.
I hiked through the woods near Baby Doll Swamp
And combed the cornfields on Halloween Farm.
I woke up with a hangover
And mosquito bites all over my arm.
I overheard my wife on her cellphone
Saying something about,
‘I don’t think I can take this anymore.”
I think she was crying in the bathroom
And when she left, she slammed the door.
My daughter was standing in the hallway
I looked up and said, “Good morning, Honeybear.”
She just yelled, ‘Homewrecker”
And took off down the stairs.

Lately I’ve been hunting for gnomes
Tuesday I went to the library
To pick up some books.
When I went to the checkout line
The librarian gave me a couple funny looks.
Later that night, I grabbed a couple of beers
And went out to the garage
After everyone else went to bed.
I laid in the back seat of the car with a flashlight
And read and read and read.

Lately I've been hunting for gnomes
I've been reading about them late at night.
Now legend has it they have magical powers
That bring peace, beauty and light.
They live in backyards and gardens
Along lakes and rivers and streams
Up on mountains, down in valleys
And, I guess, you can often find them in trees.
According to one book, they are terrified
Of those ceramic lawn gnomes
That some people put in their gardens for fun.
They say whole groups of gnomes
Have dropped dead of fear
The first time they ran across one.

Lately I've been hunting for gnomes
Thursday night I went out with a baseball bat
And smashed every bloody lawn gnome
In the neighborhood.
Man, it was a full frontal atrack.
Somebody called the cops
And I spent the night laying under someone's
Boat over on Pumpkinvine Lane.
When I got home all of my clothes
Were on the sidewalk with a note
Saying, 'Have fun going insane.'

Lately I've been hunting for gnomes
I go out now almost every night.
I catch glimpses of them in flower beds
And bushes, or see their shadows
In the soft moonlight.
See behind this curtain of pain and woe
There's a world of wonder, love and wealth.
There's magic out there brothers and sisters
you just have to go find it for yourself.

“Mother’s Acting Strange”

Mother’s Acting Strange
Something’s just not right
Last night I saw her
Dancing on the front lawn
Beneath the pale moonlight
When I mentioned it
This morning
She said, ‘Don’t be silly,
I was sleeping in my room.’
But she wouldn’t look
Me in the eye
And there were grass stains
On her shoes.
Today she picked
Me up from school
In this long black cloak
And pointy hat
You know there’s
A litter box downstairs
And we don’t even own a cat.

Mother’s Acting Strange
I don’t know if you’ve
Noticed it or not
But she’s been cooking
Outside beneath
The willow tree
In this big black
Smoking pot.
We used to have
spaghetti and meatballs
Or maybe burgers and fries
But now it’s tongue of bat
And fenny snake
Or eye of newt surprise.
You know she says
Fathers away on business
Now when I tell you this
Don’t think I’ve gone mad
But there’s a white rat
In a cage down in the cellar
With a sign on it marked Dad.

You know, everything seems strange
Even things at school, they’re not right
You remember that kid
With the different colored eyes
Who picked on me?
It seems he’s disappeared
From sight.
His parents are frantic
And they say when his mom
Went through his room
She found a frog in a shoebox
Underneath his bed
With one brown eye
And one eye blue
When I told mother about it
She started laughing and said,
‘What a scream!’
Then she broke into a chorus
Of, “It’s Not Easy Being Green”

Mother’s Acting Strange
Even watching TV
There’s no rest
Every night it’s either
Charmed or Bewitched
She says she likes
The first Darren best.
Tonight she says she’ll be home late
And while she’s gone
I should sweep out my room
But I’ve looked all over the house
And I can’t find the broom.
